Given to Louis Pasteur by farmers from the district of Pithiviers on January 10, 1884. This feminine allegory is part of the monument dedicated to the memory of the painter Henri Regnault (1844–1871) and the 11 students of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts killed in Buzenval and Montretout during the War of 1870. The monument was inaugurated in the courtyard of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris on August 11, 1876. This allegory also appears on the tomb of Regnault at Montparnasse Cemetery. The father of Henri Regnault (1810–1878), physicist and photographer, was a friend of Louis Pasteur.
