Tanner was among the few African American artists to enjoy international success and acclaim during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he studied with American artist Thomas Eakins. Tanner moved to France due to racial prejudices in the United States and succeeded in his career there. This still-life shows the influence of French impressionism and the postimpressionist artist Paul Cézanne.
