In both Chinese and Japanese “one egret” (yilu or ichiro) sounds the same as “all the way [to success].” The windswept scene of an egret and a willow tree symbolised the struggles an individual would face in order to achieve professional recognition. Here, the snowy white plumage of the bird is depicted in reverse against a carefully brushed ink wash.
