This unusual reticule is constructed from steel beads, silk, cotton crochet and, most interestingly, dried cloves. The inclusion of cloves may indicate that the bag carried medicines or remedies of some kind. Cloves were considered to have strong antiseptic properties as well as a strong and lasting odour (which still remains on this object).
