Museum: Abbot Hall Art Gallery (Kendal, United Kingdom)

Technique: Pencil

Alison Wilding is best-known as an abstract sculptor, who works with a range of materials, from wood, stone and bronze to steel, wax and silk, often in unusual combinations. Abbot Hall mounted an exhibition of her sculpture in 1997, including a large reflective metal sculpture which was installed in the Georgian Saloon downstairs. She is also a noted draughtsman, who is interested in exploring the possibilities of drawing. This image is made up of two drawings which are superimposed. Visible through the thin upper layer of paper is the silhouette of an elephant, around which the artist has drawn a single, unbroken line, suggesting the form of a boulder in a landscape.
