Two stags at bay, chased by hunters and dogs. Stag hunting was a popular subject in 16th-century Flemish art. The low horizon, the ample trees, the vistas and the choice of colours all indicate Flemish influence. Yet Bleker lived and worked in Haarlem. He made innovative prints in the 1630swhich prominently feature cattle, horses, and other livestock.Suggested listening (streaming mp3, 3 minutes):Carl Maria von Weber: Der Freischütz, Act III: Jagerchor
