Flagellation of Christ – (Called L'orbetto Alessandro Turchi) Previous Next

Artist:

Date: 1600

Museum: Castelvecchio Museum (Verona, Italy)

Technique: Stone

The current state of conservation of the slab is not good, as there are numerous scratches, stitchings and colour alterations; again, the tunic of the henchman on the right, the breeches of the one on the left and the rosy robe of Christ on the ground are repainted. Many versions of the composition are known, some with variations. In all these variants, Christ is tied to a low column, which reproduces the one brought to Rome from Jerusalem by Cardinal Colonna in the 13th century and deposited in the basilica of Santa Prassede.
