Portrait of Prof Cheryl de la Rey by the South African artist Cyril Coetzee (b.1958). Prof Cheryl Merle de la Rey was the twelfth Principal of the University of Pretoria and her tenure stretched between 2009 and 2018. The official collecting of portraits and the foundation of the Collection began on 9 September 1974. Prof A.N. Pelzer suggested that the University commence a collection of portraits of former Chancellors, Chairs of the Council and Principals. Between 1974 and 2010 the line-up of previous Principals and Chancellors were completed, a tradition that is still continuing with new appointments within the University of Pretoria.Short Biography: Cyril Coetzee was born in 1959 in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. He studied at Rhodes University and obtained his Masters qualification in 1983.
