Artist: Cyril Colnik
Date: 1955
Museum: Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum (Milwaukee, United States)
Technique: Iron
This L-shaped iron grille is thought to be a sample piece created by Colnik while he was planning and designing the ironwork for the Paula and Erwin Uihlein house. Each of the eight curving segments is in a slightly different pattern, most likely to give the patrons more choices. According to the Villa Terrace records, the pattern for this grille was modeled on the iron gates of St. Swithun’s shrine in Winchester Cathedral, England. Cyril drew inspiration from many locations and time periods for his own work.Photography by Kevin Miyazaki.
