Fukuda Kodōjin, the Chinese characters of whose name mean literally “Old Daoist,” was highly regarded not only for his accomplishments in the fields of painting and calligraphy but also as a poet of Chinese verse. For this work he brushed a four-line, five-character poem as two columns of brusque, cursive calligraphy, beginning at upper right:靄々古松色 雲霞流水閑老鶴引雉歩 和鳴天地間Over the colors of ancient pines,Clouds and mist flow like an idle stream.An old crane and pheasant walk on,Their calls merging heaven and the earth.
