Several reasons lead us to consider this oboe a genuine jewel of the Museum. In the first place its excellent conditions of preservation, then the precious materials used (ivory and gilded silver) and the technical expertise revealed by the body’s craftsmanship: the body has first been turned and then finished with gouge and plane to obtain a perfectly octagonal section. Finally because it provides early evidence (1722) of a solution that became common only after the mid-1700s, namely the presence of a pièce de rechange to change the instrument’s pitch.
