‘War Hysteria’ is a notion proposed through the personal experience of conflict by Palestinian artist, Hazem Harb. By placing these two words together, Harb’s visual imagery describes the psychological state of the individual - in this case the artist himself - as a direct result of growing up in the Gaza Strip. In this context, hysteria acts as a catalyst for these new paintings by Harb, charged with ‘blind’ emotion or a spiritual vision. These depictions are highly charged with raw emotional angst and a sense of helplessness towards the situation in Gaza. This internal confl ict is outwardly projected onto canvas as a form of catharsis as well as a documentation. - Jareh Das
