A mounted preparatory sketch on paper in black ink depicting a falcon perched on a branch, dated 1903. Falcons had long been used in Japan for hunting, and symbolised strength and nobility. They were therefore associated with the ruling class of warriors (samurai). This is a quickly sketched image, with the branch suggested with only a few strokes, and the plumage simply formed.
