The Leeuwarden Series: Foreigners in the Service of the States-General A member of a noble Scottish family, Robert Henderson became, at the close of the 16th century, a lieutenant and later a captain under Sir Alexander Murray in a Scottish company in the service of the United Provinces.43 In 1603, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel, and in 1614 to colonel in another Scottish company fighting in the Netherlands. He was killed during the Siege of Bergen op Zoom in the night of 16 August 1622. Judging by the sitter’s costume, the lost prototype probably dated from between 1605 and 1615.
