The painting in the museum’s collection has the stylistic of Northern European Renaissance and mannerism. It belongs to the type of depiction known as “Hieronymous in his room” that mainly emphasise the holy man’s education. Evidence of this is in the attributes of scientific work: books, inkwell and quill. The author has reduced the dimensions of the interior, provided an opening to the outside world in the background and supplemented the traditional vanitas features (the ephemeral nature of earthly life) with an extinguished candle, a plucked blossom on the table and an hourglass by the window. The plastic of the hard forms that are independent of the chiaroscuro is rejuvenated by the manifold localised tones whose range is set by the powerful red of the clothing.
