Artist: Lucas Cranach The Elder
Museum: Grand Palais (Paris, France)
Technique: Huile
The famous Greek myth has been transposed to the time of the artist, Lucas Cranach I, who painted his female characters as 16th Century courtesans. Hercules is seduced by Omphale, Queen of Lydia, who eventually marries him. He is shown here to be spinning wool - an image of absolute love which reduces Hercules to servitude, losing all sense of his power.
