The Leeuwarden Series: Foreigners in the Service of the States-General Syrius de Bethune was a member of the high French nobility and a Huguenot.42 He probably went to the northern Netherlands together with his brother, Leonidas, to learn the art of warfare from Prince Maurits. In 1604, he was made captain and in the following year, colonel of a French regiment in the service of the United Provinces. As the commander of 4,000 French troops, he took part in the expedition to Gulik in 1610. After that, he placed himself at the disposal of the city of Geneva. Contrary to what is stated in past Rijksmuseum collection catalogues, this painting is not signed by Van Mierevelt.43 Rather, his misspelled name is part of an inscription that also records the sitter’s name. The portrait was probably executed in Van Mierevelt’s workshop after an original by the master. Judging by the ‘stitched and shagged’ ruff à la confusion worn by the sitter, the prototype, which has not been located, was probably executed between about 1615 and 1620.44 Jonathan Bikker, 2007 See Bibliography and Rijksmuseum painting catalogues See Key to abbreviations and Acknowledgements This entry was published in J.
