Mika Yoshizawa is a Japanese contemporary artist born in Tokyo. Yoshizawa completed the graduate course of Tama Art University in 1984. Her worldwide activities include participation in 18th Bienal de São Paulo in 1985 and 1987 documenta 8 (Kassel, Germany). Her activities in Japan include a solo show in Iwaki City Museum (Fukushima), group shows in Hara Museum (Tokyo), Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, and Sezon Museum of Modern Art (Nagano). While Yoshizawa produced installations using drawings in her early career, she turned to produce three-dimensional abstract paintings in monotone on a support made of acrylic or polypropylene. In addition to changing the support to synthetic paper, Yoshizawa introduced repeated pyramid-like figures to Wo 71 to attach another layer to the pictorial space, which had consisted of relations between monotone forms and their backgrounds in her previous works. One reason why we are attracted to Yoshizawa’s paintings is because she easily transcends convention boundaries of her previous works and continues to create up-to-date paintings in an unrestricted manner.
