Nikola Petrov created a series of urban landscape paintings, representing Sofia landmarks that helped transform the capital into a modern city, such as “St. Sofia Church”, “Lion’s Bridge”, “The National Theater” and “Banski Square”. His landscapes, both urban and natural, are in the spirit of post-Impressionism, while also drawing on Symbolism. Petrov’s life was cut short by tuberculosis during WWI. Today his works are considered classics of Modern Art in Bulgaria.
