Dolorosa (Lady of Sorrows) is a sculpture in which the artist abstracts the fundamental elements of Our Lady of Sorrows, one of the most popular and revered images of Catholic iconography that relates to suffering and to the episodes of the passion of Christ, celebrated in Holy Week, both in Spain and in Mexico. More attracted to the visual impact and content of the traditional image than to religious reasons, the artist delves into the popular pathos and manages to capture the cult’s essential symbols with limited references: the heart, the dagger, and the crown’s radiance, whose beauty is depicted through two assembled and cutout sheets of metal that are supported on a quarry base. With such few components, he manages to synthesize the rich religious meanings, through which he channels his own emotion, in order to share the secrets of thousand-year-old rituals with the observer in a conclusive manner.
