In the overall view of the Venetian 17th century the figure of Muttoni is both unusual and typical. A copyist and falsifier of grand masters of the 16th century, especially Giorgione and Titian, he was much in demand by private collectors. And yet he was not insensitive to the realistic painting of his time, as can be seen in this picaresque subject.
