Giuseppe Riccardo Maggioni (1862-1934), son of a fabric shopkeeper, graduated in accounting, specialized in Switzerland, London and Paris, learning three languages and opened a chemical and colonial import-export company back in Milan. After retiring from business, he left the Lombard capital, dividing his time between Nice and Genoa, where he died. In his will he appoints the Ospedale Maggiore as the universal heir of his substantial patrimony, providing legacies of 25,000 lire for various charitable and welfare institutions and the annuity for his wife. The commemorative portrait is assigned to Remo Taccani, a self-taught painter (he is a failed engineer) but who had long attended Napoleon Grady
