Lorenzi Stoldo’s Adam, together with a statue of Eve,originally decorated the niches of the façade of the church of Santa Maria bySan Celso in Milan. Eventoday we do not know for certain why the two sculptures were removed andreplaced with two copies, but we can hypothesise that they were taken downbecause in poor condition. TheAdam exhibited in the Museum is nowsupported by a carved tree trunk. Acareful and complex restoration completed in 2017 has allowed the quality ofthe marble and the fine sculpting to re-emerge from under a dark cover ofpatina. The artist references Michelangelo
