Takuma Tametō was a Japanese artist born in 1132 and died in 1174, known for his work in the field of printmaking and painting. He was a member of the Nihonga movement, which sought to revive traditional Japanese art forms and techniques while incorporating Western influences. Gakkō Bosatsu is an example of Takuma Tametō's work from the Sōsaku hanga Art Movement (創作版画), also known as "creative prints," which emerged in early 20th-century Japan. This movement emphasized the artist as the sole creator motivated by a desire for self-expression and advocated principles of art that are "self-drawn" (自画 jiga), "self-carved" (自刻 jikoku) and "self-printed" (自摺 jizuri). This movement diverged from the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system, where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor.
This painting is a depiction of the Bodhisattva of Moon-Radiance (Gakkō Bosatsu) and comes from a book of iconographic drawings representing the vast array of Buddhas and bodhisattvas depicted in the Diamond World (Kongōkai) and Womb World (Taizōkai) Mandalas. The deity’s “seed syllables” (shuji), tiny Sanskrit characters that signify his nature and function, appear at the bottom right along with Chinese characters.
Gakkō Bosatsu is an important representation of Buddhist deities in Japanese art. The Diamond World (Kongōkai) and Womb World (Taizōkai) Mandalas, from which this painting comes, are two of the most significant mandalas in Esoteric Buddhism. These mandalas represent the universe and its enlightened beings, and Gakkō Bosatsu is one of the many deities depicted within them.
Gakkō Bosatsu, from “Album of Buddhist Deities from the Diamond World and Womb World Mandalas” (“Kontai butsugajō”) by Takuma Tametō is an important representation of Buddhist deities in Japanese art. This painting showcases Takuma Tametō's mastery of traditional Japanese art forms and techniques while incorporating Western influences, making it a valuable addition to any collection of Japanese art.
