A Franciscan and preacher, Saint Anthony is here depicted wearing the brown habit of his order. In this image Saint Anthony is shown with the usual Franciscan tonsure, along with the collar that extends back to form the hood and the long cord belt with its three knots symbolizing chastity, poverty and obedience to the rule hanging down at the side.The volume and movement of the gilt-edged habit’s folds, which are caught at the side, bear clear similarities to depictions of the Virgin Mary. The face and neck of this wooden image are made of ivory. The hands (now missing) were probably also made of ivory. Besides the inevitable characteristics of the Franciscan habit, Saint Anthony is most always accompanied by a closed book held in the left hand, upon which he supports the Child Jesus either standing with hand raised in blessing or, seated in majesty. Both these elements are missing in this image.
