Lioness with a Snake – (Venanzo Crocetti) Previous Next

Artist:

Museum: Crocetti Museum (Rome, Italy)

Technique: Sculpture

The composition, with many cultural references, belongs to the group of fairs that in the 1930s Crocetti realized also thanks to the ten-year observation of the felines of the Rome Zoo and to the attendance of the Great Circus Sneider, camped since 1931 at the Piazzale dei Prati Strozzi, in the Flaminio district where the sculptor of Giulianova lived in those years. This subject, which depicts the victory of a lioness over a snake, has medieval artistic-literary origins, both related to the symbolic meaning of bestiaries and ecclesiastical depictions, and referring to tales of chivalry.
