Zhang Lichen was born in 1939 in Peixian County, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1965. After 1977, he taught at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and was a professor and chairman of the Department of Chinese Painting. He is a member of China Artists Association and vice president of Beijing Flower and Bird Painting Research Association.
