Zheng Wuchang, born in Sheng county in Zhejiang province, whose name was actually Chang, was also known by his literary names Ruokan and Sibinsanren. He named his study Lutaixianguan, meaning the deer’s matrix and the immortal’s chamber. He was the head of the Art Division at Zhonghua Book Company , and a professor at National Academy of Art , Shanghai Fine Art School as well as shanghai Xinhua Private Art School. He specialized in painting mountains and water as well as flowers, and was also accomplished in poetry and calligraphy. Zheng researched into the theories of painting and emphasized that one should “draw on traditional paintings and establish one’s own style” in learning Chinese painting. He wrote a number of books including The Chinese Fine Art History , The History of Chinese Mural Painting , and The Complete History of Traditional Chinese Painting.
