Nacido en Üsküdar, Estambul, Şeker Ahmed Paşa fue un miembro líder del grupo de pintores militares. Comenzó sus estudios en 1855 en el Colegio Médico, pero en 1856 se fue a matricularse en la Academia Militar. Mientras que todavía un estudiante allí trabajó como profesor asistente de arte. En 1864 el sultán Abdülaziz le concedió una beca para estudiar arte en París. En 1870 estudió bajo los pintores Gustave Boulanger y Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). Sus pinturas fueron exhibidas en el Salón de París en 1869 y 1870. En 1871 regresó a Estambul, donde fue nombrado para enseñar en la Escuela de Arte de Sultanahmet, y también enseñó en varias escuelas militares. Subió al rango de capitán y comenzó a enseñar arte en el Colegio Médico. En 1873 organizó Turquía
