Abraham Brueghel se registra por primera vez en Roma en 1659, y su actividad como pintor de vida muerta está documentada por lo menos por 1663/64.22 Sin embargo, su primer extante firmado y fechado pintura, de una mujer que toma fruto de una cornisa, en el Museo del Louvre, París, es de 1669.23La pintura actual del año siguiente es la segunda obra extante del artista para llevar una fecha. En contraste con la pintura del Louvre, que tiene una muestra extravagante de fruta, está sujeta y modesta de ambición; y aunque no hay razón para dudar de la autenticidad de la firma, es quizás bastante vacilantemente escrito y parece ambicioso para el alcance de la obra. Sin embargo, la pintura es comparable a la firmada y fechada en el año siguiente en la Galleria Sabauda, Turín, publicada por Hoogewerff.24Gregory Martin, 2022
