Michallon exhibió por primera vez en el Salón de París en 1812, a los dieciséis años, y fue galardonado con el Prix de Roma inaugural en la categoría de pintura histórica del paisaje en 1817; es probable que este estudio data del período entre, cuando, como alumno de Jean Victor Bertin, fue instruido para dar árboles individuales. Una característica característica es la manera en que el cielo es filtrado por el cañón del árbol, lamiendo el borde derecho de esta elegante haya y sus compañeros esbeltos con luz dorada.
