En 1783 Labille-Guiard se convirtió en una de las cuatro pintores admitidas en la Real Academia Francesa. Una retratista líder, mostró aceites y pasteles regularmente en el Salón. También fue una maestra importante para la próxima generación de mujeres artistas, como capturada en su autorretrato con dos alumnos, una pintura histórica también en la colección Met. Este pastel es un estudio para un retrato más formal de Madame Elisabeth, la hermana menor de Luis XVI. La familia inmediata del rey, en particular sus tías, eran protectores clave y patronos de Labille-Guiard.
