Las primeras obras exhibidas por Schreyer fueron escenas militares e históricas. Después de un viaje de estudio a Francia y África del Norte, se estableció en París desde 1862 hasta 1870, cuando regresó a Frankfurt. En París exhibió escenas árabes que se compararon con las de Delacroix y Fromentin. No salió con sus pinturas y a menudo repitió motivos. Una imagen inversa del jinete en esta obra aparece como la figura central del Guerrero Árabe (Milwaukee Art Center).
