Esta vista interior íntima evocadora pertenece a un grupo de cinco pinturas en las que Menzel estudió los efectos de la luz en espacios simplemente amueblados que ocupó en Berlín entre 1845 y 1851. Son enteramente característicos de su ojo inquebrantable por los detalles quotidinos, pero el artista consideró tales experimentos y nunca los exhibió. En su lugar, su fama descansaba en piezas de vestuario histórico y escenas trincheras de la vida contemporánea en la capital alemana.
