Este recién redescubierto autorretrato de Adriaen Hanneman pintado no sobre el lienzo habitual sino sobre el panel es la última obra datada de este retratista de La Haya. En 1669, cuando pintó este autorretrato, el Hanneman de 65 años se casó por tercera vez. Este evento pudo haber proporcionado el impulso directo para la creación de este trabajo virtuoso.
