Dauzats viajó a Egipto con una misión diplomática francesa en 1830 y pintó esta impresionante vista de la Gran Pirámide poco después de regresar a París. En su relato escrito del viaje (Quinze jours au Sinaï, 1839, coautor de Alexandre Dumas), el artista se maravilló con la destreza física "como la nieve" que se requiere para revolotear sobre el monumento antiguo" los enormes bloques de piedra para llegar a la cumbre.
