Boy with a Crow has made people wonder how the 19-year-old Akseli Gallen-Kallela who had never been to France could paint such a picture in the manner of Parisian realism. Su inspiración estilística ha sido obviamente el arte de Jules Bastien-Lepage, admirado por la mayoría de los jóvenes pintores finlandeses de la época. En realidad Gallen-Kallela había tomado lecciones privadas el invierno anterior de Albert Edelfelt, quien vivía en París y había sido la fuente de estas influencias del realismo al aire libre. El tema de la pintura es el carácter de este campesino, que el artista conocía desde antes.
