A finales de 1894, Akseli Gallen-Kallela fue a Berlín para aprender los fundamentos de la grabadora, que estaba disfrutando de un nuevo vogue debido a la popularidad de los cortes de madera japoneses y el estilo decorativo Art Nouveau. Su viaje fue corto cuando su hija Marjatta murió de difteria en marzo de 1895. La Flor de la Muerte es un recuerdo para ella. Fue tallada sobre un disco de madera de pino, suave y grueso, pero la impresión es sutil y delicada. El poema adjunto es por el propio artista:
