Sacramento Japóntown nativo Agnes Miyakawa (1911-1995) dejó su hogar para estudiar el canto en París. En 1931, a los 19 años, hizo su debut en la Opera Comique. Su actuación como Cio-Cio San en la ópera Madame Butterfly ganó aclamación crítica y popular. Ella siguió actuando en Japón, Los Ángeles y otros lugares. También apareció en películas y en radio.
