La Conspiración de Claudio Civilis fue originalmente la pintura más grande jamás creada por Rembrandt, en forma de un lunette, o un rectángulo vertical con una cornisa redonda en la parte superior. El cuadro fue encargado originalmente por la ciudad de Amsterdam para el ayuntamiento. Sin embargo, el consejo de Amsterdam rechazó la pintura y la devolvió al artista, y todavía se desconoce si se le pagó o no por la obra. Después de recibir la pintura, Rembrandt cortó el lienzo hasta un cuarto de su tamaño original, para vender la pintura.
