Bierstadt viajó en un viaje extendido Oeste en el verano de 1872, que incluyó una visita de regreso a la región de Yosemite donde tomó el boceto de Owens Valley, California. Tomó el río Owens en primer plano con el recién descubierto Monte Whitney que se avecinaba en el fondo. Pockets de nieve blanca corren a través de la cordillera. Para 1913, el pintoresco agua del río Owens fue desviada a Los Ángeles, llevando finalmente a la destrucción de la rica economía agrícola del Valle de Owen. Este conflicto llegó a ser conocido como "California Water Wars".
