Albert Bierstadt realizó seis viajes separados al Oeste desde su estudio de Nueva York entre 1859 y 1870, produciendo bocetos que producirían las pinturas al óleo de los Rockies por las que es más conocido, así como esta visión pastoral de un paisaje decididamente más plano. Sus puntos de vista proporcionaron audiencias orientales ansiosas con visiones de un Occidente idealizado, lleno de magníficas vistas y recursos inagotables que los estadounidenses se sentían destinados a reclamar y disfrutar.
