Groll, que nació en Nueva York, viajó por primera vez a Arizona, el tema de este paisaje, en 1904 con el etnólogo Stewart Culin. Pronto, sus pinturas occidentales se volvieron populares y le ganaron una medalla en la exposición anual de 1906 en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pennsylvania. Las pinturas de Groll del paisaje occidental impresionaron a los indios del Pueblo tanto que lo apodaron “Chief Bald-Head-Eagle-Eye” por su capacidad de capturar la inmensidad de la tierra y las nubes torrentes.
