La pintura fue comisionada por los padres teatinos de la iglesia de San Vicente en Piacenza y representa el episodio en el que San Carlos Borromeo visita el Lazaret para dar a los enfermos la comodidad de los sacramentos. Reanuda la iconografía de una pintura bien conocida de ese período por Ludovico Carracci, hecha para la abadía de Nonantola.
