Capitán de ingeniería militar en el ejército de Metz en 1870, se opuso a la rendición de la ciudad entonces rodeada, y presentó en vano a Bazaine un informe que demostraba la vulnerabilidad del ejército prusiano. Salió de la ciudad sitiada para unirse al gobierno de Defensa Nacional en Tours, y propone una maniobra que permite alejar al enemigo lejos de sus bases, éste fue despedido. Partisano de la guerra al extremo, ofreció sus servicios a la Comuna de París el 19 de marzo de 1871 y fue nombrado
