Las reglas religiosas prohibieron que las mujeres actuaran en iglesias católicas, contribuyendo al surgimiento de castrati, sopranos masculinos que fueron castrados antes del comienzo de la pubertad. Entre los castrati más célebres, Pasqualini es coronado en este retrato por el dios Apolo, que había sido victorioso en un concurso musical con el satyr Marsyas (muestra en el fondo, derrotado y atado a un árbol con sus gaitas a su lado). Pasqualini se unió al coro de la Capilla Sixtina en 1630, y a partir de 1632 fue protagonista en muchas óperas producidas en el Palazzo Barberini, para las cuales Sacchi diseñó conjuntos.
