Entre sus innovaciones, Annibale lanzó el vogue para paisajes en los que la naturaleza fue cuidadosamente estudiada pero transformada por la imaginación en un escenario idílico para historias religiosas o mitológicas. Los grandes ojos de almendro de la figura principal derivan del estudio de la escultura antigua. La pintura de Annibale representa a Juan anunciando la llegada de Cristo, a quien señala y a quien bautizará al día siguiente. Este hermoso aceite de cobre ha sido parte de varias colecciones ilustres, incluyendo la familia Farnese en Parma y la colección Orléans en París.
