Lang estaba entre los alumnos talentosos de Chase en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pennsylvania, donde también tomó clases con Cecilia Beaux. Abrazando un enfoque impresionista a sus sujetos, Lang expuso con éxito a través de los Estados Unidos. Un crítico, escribiendo en 1917, observó que era la estudiante de Chase "quien mejor asimilaba su técnica y verbo." Un modelo frecuente para su maestra, que elogió su "capacidad notable", Lang también lo pintó muchas veces. En 1918, tras un año de viajes del Caribe, fue víctima de la gripe española. Póstumamente, la firma de Lang fue reemplazada por la de Chase en algunas de sus pinturas, incluyendo esta.
