Los cabezales de estudio de este tipo fueron pintados por Van Dyck usando modelos vivos, cuyas características fueron repetidas en imágenes terminadas, generalmente de temas religiosos. Por ejemplo, este boceto sirvió como prototipo para una semejanza de la Virgen María en una representación de la Sagrada Familia. La iconografía de la joven melancolía con pelo largo que fluye por los hombros también se adapta a las imágenes de María Magdalena. Intrigantemente, un biógrafo temprano nos dice que Van Dyck una vez representó a su hermana Susanna con ese disfraz.
