Este impresionante retrato, pintado alrededor de 1618 cuando el artista tenía dieciocho o diecinueve años, está muy cerca de estilo a retratos contemporáneos y ligeramente anteriores de Rubens, para los cuales Van Dyck trabajaba en ese momento. En su insistencia en el volumen y las texturas, la estrecha atención al detalle del vestuario, y la pose pasiva y la expresión, la pintura también se adhiere a una antigua tradición neotelandesa, como se ve en los retratos de Anthonis Mor (ca. 1516/19-ca. 1575/76).
